The project: New catalysts for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia
The aim of this PhD studentship is to exploit the research area of new catalysts for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. To tackle the problem associated with energy and climate change, more and more renewable energy is integrated to the existing energy generation system. Due to the intermittence nature of some renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and wave, it is desired to have an efficient and economically viable energy storage system. To convert the extra renewable electricity which cannot be ‘absorbed’ by national grid into useful chemicals such as ammonia offers many opportunities.
Conventional ammonia industry based on the Haber-Bosch process is based on fossil fuels. It consumed more than 1% of world power generation and released 0.77% of the world total CO2 emission. It is time to introduce new ammonia synthesis process and to break the link between fossil fuels and ammonia industry.
Fortunately, for the first time, we have successfully synthesised ammonia from air and water at ambient conditions. A systematically research is desired to develop new catalysts for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. During the PhD study, you are supposed to develop new catalysts for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia and study the reaction mechanism.
Training: This is an exciting cross-disciplinary subject and you will be trained in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, solid state chemistry and catalysis. The candidate will receive extensive training in electrochemical synthesis and will acquire extra skills and experience through close liaison with industry. This will provide outstanding access to training, facilities and expertise. In addition, s/he will have an opportunity to develop a range of valuable skills and significantly enhance his/her future employability. The knowledge and skills developed will provide the candidate with a solid foundation for his/her future academic or industrial career
Eligibility:
We are looking for creative and highly motivated applicants that should hold a First class or Upper Second class (2:i) degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science with good English communication skills and two supporting academic references.
Funding Details:
The Scholarship will pay an annual stipend at the standard rate (currently £14,057) and cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate for 3 years. Overseas candidates can apply but you need to cover the difference in fees between home and overseas candidates.
