On the occasion of EXPO Milan 2015 on the theme of “Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life” and in the context of the European Year for Development 2015, the Committee on Development of the European Parliament (DEVE) is organising a panel debate in the EU pavilion in Milan on the topic of “human rights, right to food and land rights – what legal instruments are needed?”.
The Committee is sponsoring a call for research papers and essays on the topic of the event: Human rights, right to food and land rights. The paper should provide an original analysis of the current situation and identify gaps in relation to the legal instruments needed internationally and/or regionally to increase global food security and ensure access to land for vulnerable groups in developing countries. Furthermore, the paper should also focus on the role of the EU and other international organisations in addressing these gaps and shaping an adequate legal framework. Based on the submissions, two students may be invited to present their papers at the DEVE panel debate at EXPO Milan on 15 October 2015. Selected papers will also be published on the European Parliament website.
The selection process will be prepared by the DEVE Secretariat, in cooperation with the Global Campus of Master’s Programmes and Diplomas in Human Rights and Democratisation, and be subject to endorsement by DEVE Committee Coordinators.
Guidelines
Papers should be written in English and have a length of 12.000 – 20.000 characters, excluding citations and spaces. In addition, a brief abstract and a short biography of the author (up to 500 characters each) should be annexed.
This call for papers is open to students currently enrolled in a university programme in the field of development studies, human rights, law or political sciences, agriculture, environment, regional studies, etc. Students may write and submit a paper jointly.
The criteria for evaluation will reflect:
• Clarity of argument and style;
• Reflection of most current literature and research and legal acquis;
• Originality of ideas and thorough treatment of those ideas.
References and sources must be clearly identified. Any standard referencing system may be used as long as it is consistent throughout the text.
The author(s) of the paper shall add and sign a declaration that the paper submitted is completely their own work, that no part of this paper is taken from other people’s work without giving them credit, and that they agree to the European Parliament publishing the paper while the author(s) retain(s) all other rights including that of publishing the paper elsewhere.
Deadline for submission is Monday 31 August 2015, 10:00 am CET.
