Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women Japan Liaison Office has been established in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan since April 2015. The Office works on strengthening UN Women’s partnerships in Japan and raising awareness about UN Women’s work, for example through lectures and public events. In particular, it is expected to outreach to various actors, including the government, parliaments, private enterprises, academics, NGOs, media and other and to keep them informed about UN Women’s work and role with regards to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The Japan Liaison Office is organizing an event to commemorate the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2016. The event aims to foster and further the Japanese people’s understandings about challenges and opportunities presented to gender equality and empowerment of women with the outcome of WAW!2015, forthcoming Ise-Shima Summit in mind and towards the SDGs. The consultant will be engaged in the organizing this event and other events at the Japan Liaison Office as well as supporting a variety of its communication and outreach activities and partnership development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of the UN Women Japan Liaison Office, the main responsibilities of the Consultant will be to:
- Support fundraising, partnership and advocacy activities of the UN Women Japan Liaison Office, including through the production of briefing notes, donor intelligence and other materials regarding UN Women’s partnerships in Japan;
- Provide assistance in organizing the International Women’s Day event and other events organized by the UN Women Japan Liaison Office;
- Support efforts to follow-up on the outcome of the World Assembly for Women (WAW!2015) as it relates to UN Women;
- Support UN Women’s senior management missions to Japan;
- Provide assistance in UN Women’s advocacy activities related to the Ise Shima Summit;
- Support activities of UN Women to reach out to various sectors including private enterprises and build partnership with them;
- Plan and implement the resource mobilization and communications strategy for the UN Women Japan Liaison Office and support in the implementation of UN Women’s campaigns;
- Produce timely, accurate and high-quality information materials, such as press releases and media advisories, news briefs, fact sheets, information kits and other communication and visibility products for media outreach, the Japan Liaison Office’s website and other information channels;
- Translate and interpret in both ways between English and Japanese in connection with the Japan Liaison Office’s resource mobilization, communication and outreach activities;
- Formulate reports on the Japan Liaison Office’s communication and fundraising activities;
- Identify innovative opportunities and new communications tools and platforms which can serve to highlight the work of UN Women in Japan;
- Provide any other assistance which will raise public awareness and understanding about gender equality and empowerment of women.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field.
Experience:
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in partnership development, fundraising, or relevant fields;
- Experience in a variety of outreach activities including event organizing and development of information materials;
- Outstanding oral and written communications and editing skills both in English and Japanese languages, with proven ability to meet tight deadline;
- Experience in working on media relations is an asset;
- Familiarity with gender issues is an asset;
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and good IT skills;
- Familiarity with UN Women and UN system will be an advantage.
