The Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel seeks to employ a full-time Communications and Marketing Officer. The IES is an autonomous interdisciplinary institute within the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The IES engages in research, education and training, and organizes a multitude of academic services. Currently, the IES hosts approximately 50 staff (full-time equivalents). The working language of the Institute is English.
Function and profile
As Communications and Marketing Officer, you will be responsible for the overall external communication and marketing of the IES. This includes communicating with the press, general public, and potential students, and this in close collaboration with the marketing and communications department (MARCOM) of the university at large. You will also be in charge of the liaison between the IES and other communications / marketing groups at the VUB and the Brussels University Alliance.
Marketing tasks
- Recruitment of students for the Institute’s Advanced Master and Executive Master programmes: coordination / creation of marketing and recruitment campaigns in collaboration with the university’s overall marketing and communications department;
- The creation of textual information for activities, general marketing and overall recruitment of students;
- Research of e-marketing possibilities and review of existing online campaigns.
Communication tasks
- Managing the content of the IES outlets, such as the website(s) (overall content management, publishing news items, media appearances, new staff, other content pages) and the social media accounts (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, …);
- Publications: coordination and editing of the IES Policy Brief Series and the IES Annual Report;
- Communication of research activities: promoting research results and academic activities to the press, the academic community and the general public;
- Compilation and publishing of the monthly external and internal newsletters;
- Responsible for the internal communication within the Insitute;
- Other tasks relating to communication, marketing and recruitment, as defined by IES Management.
Essential skills/knowledge
- A higher education degree (Master level) in communication and/or marketing, or a different social sciences degree at the same level with practical experience in marketing and communication;
- Native-speaker level of English in speaking and writing;
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills – the ability to write in English for different audiences;
- Good ICT skills;
- Knowledge and/or experience of marketing and/or student recruitment;
- Knowledge and experience of working with social media
- A high degree of responsibility, professionalism and the ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently
Desirable Skills/knowledge
- Dutch language skills (at a sufficient level to write and communicate in Dutch)
- Assertiveness and social skills;
- Knowledge and/or experience of Public Relations and/or Press Relations
- The IES works with MS Office, FileMaker, InDesign and Photoshop – knowledge of these programmes is desirable.
