[Call for team members] European Youth Media Days 2016 (special edition): Reporting on the European Youth Event 2016




European-Youth-Press-EYPThe European Youth Press is looking for 20 young motivated journalists to become part of the team that will organise the 2016 edition of the European Youth Media Days (EYMD), one of the biggest events for young media-makers in Europe. Team members will facilitate seven media workshops (two TV, one radio, print, multimedia, photo and new media) and/or will assist participants and the organisers in external communication, guidance of participants, and logistical preparations during the three days.

European Youth Media Days 2016 (organised by the European Parliament in collaboration with the European Youth Press – Network of young media makers) will take place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 19 – 21 May. Up to 110 young journalists aged between 18 and 30 will have the chance to report from inside the European Parliament on current issues relating to Media Freedom in Europe and beyond.

The EYMD participants will report from The European Youth Event (EYE), which will take place in the European Parliament seat in Strasbourg on 20 – 21 of May 2016. During the EYE, the European Parliament will open its doors to thousands of 16-30 year-olds from all over the EU and invite them to meet with European decision-makers and speakers with a wide range of professional experience. Together, they will exchange ideas and perspectives on youth-related issues and develop innovative solutions to crucial questions for the future. The event will also provide an opportunity to experience the rich cultural diversity within the European Union through the staging of various artistic performances.

The EYE 2016 will include a large variety of activities connected by the motto “Together we can make a change” in a political, social and cultural sense. Activities of the EYE as well as of the EYMD will focus on five main themes:

  1. War and Peace: Perspectives for a Peaceful Planet
  2. Apathy or Participation: Agenda for a Vibrant Democracy
  3. Exclusion or Access: Crackdown on Youth Unemployment
  4. Stagnation or Innovation: Tomorrow’s World of Work
  5. Collapse or Success: New Ways for a Sustainable Europe

EYMD Team Members Profiles

Being part of the organising team, you will get a significant insight into the world of media and politics. You will also have the chance to build a wide network of contacts and gain project management skills. You will have the opportunity to interact with MEPs, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange with the participants and the other members of the team.

The general criteria for all team members are the following:

The ideal candidate will be motivated, proactive and will preferably have worked with people from different cultural backgrounds. S/he will be a working journalist with good communication / organising skills and a team spirit. A very good knowledge of English is necessary in order to communicate with participants coming from the 28 EU Member States and several neighbouring countries. Previous involvement in the European Youth Media Days or in other European Youth Press projects is a plus.

Team members will have to be available online before the event and able to dedicate several hours a week to preparations leading up to the EYMD. They are expected to arrive in Strasbourg on May 19 and leave in the morning on May 22. Team members will have to be working for a mass media and able to provide official proof of their activities (see details below), aged between 18 and 30 and citizens or legal residents of one of the EU Member States. Candidates who are not able to fit this criteria would not be considered. Journalist students are welcome to apply as participants here.

Candidates for the EYMD Team are welcomed to apply for one of the following positions:

PROJECT COORDINATOR

The candidate will have at least two years of experience in project / event management. S/he will have background in leading large-scale European-level projects related to youth or media. The candidate will be a multitasker with strong attention to details, ability to deliver results on time under pressuring deadlines and proven record of team coordination. Experience in working with international institutions is an asset. S/he will be reporting to the EYMD Editorial Panel, which will provide overall direction, and will be editorially responsible for the content.

ASSISTANT PROJECT COORDINATOR

The candidate will have experience in project / event management. S/he will have background in supporting / leading national or international projects and events. The candidate will be a multitasker with strong attention to details and ability to deliver results on time under pressuring deadlines. S/he will be reporting directly to the Project Coordinator.

MEDIA TEAMS FACILITATORS / EDITORS

There are 12 open positions for Media Teams Facilitators / Editors. Facilitators will be working in pairs and managing a group of 8 – 10 young journalists working in a specific media format of one of EYMD’s workshops: video (news report), video (talk show) photo, radio, print, multimedia. They will be planning the media coverage in their groups before the event and following the progress during the event, maintaining team dynamics, editing the media outcomes and making sure they are delivered on time. Media Facilitators will report to the Editor-in-Chief. Additionally they will help during recruiting process.

The candidates should have at least two years of experience working in one of the mentioned media formats, experience in team coordination, strong editing skills and sense of style, tech-savvy and able to deliver quality results under pressuring deadlines. Experience in mentoring journalists is an asset.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The candidate will have at least four years of experience in journalism of which at least one year will be in the role of editor, preferably in multimedia environment. S/he will be a native English-speaker or have a command equal to native, sense of style, strong editorial judgment and ethics. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in a big international news room. S/he will be reporting directly to the Project Coordinator.

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

The candidate will have at least one year of experience in communications and/or PR. S/he will be tech-savvy and able to work independently. The candidate should be able to write powerful, short texts, which cuts into the heart of the issue as well as official press-releases. The candidate will be proficient in social media management and will have experience working with multimedia format. Experience in design is an asset. S/he will be reporting to the Project Coordinator and Project Coordinator’s Assistant.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

The candidate will have proven record of experience in communications and/or administrative support. S/he will be able to timely handle big amounts of correspondence, be concrete and detailed in communication, work effectively under pressure. Additionally, candidate will be able to guide and support participants on the spot. S/he will be reporting to the Project Coordinator and Project Coordinator’s Assistant.

EVENT PHOTOGRAPHER

The candidate will have proven record of experience in covering events. S/he will be able to capture the essence of the event and highlight the most interesting details, work independently, prioritise activities and deliver the comprehensive time-line of the event. S/he will be reporting to the Project Coordinator, Project Coordinator’s Assistant and Editor-in-Chief.

DESIGNER / LAYOUTER

The candidate will have at least one year of proven experience in designing and layouting. S/he will have to highlight the main message / spirit of the event as well as to bring her/his personality in the work. The candidate will be able to work effectively under pressure and with short deadlines and reproduce the guidelines given by his/her supervisors. S/he will be reporting to the Project Coordinator, Project Coordinator’s Assistant and Editor-in-Chief.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES MANAGER

The candidate will have a proven record of organizing social activities, tools, methods and creative ideas for their implementation.  S/he will be responsible for managing social part of the program for participants and the EYED team, which may include sightseeing, tours through the European Parliament, ice-breakers and energizers, informal dinners, etc. Ideal candidate will be familiar with Strasbourg and the European Parliament building. S/he will be reporting to the Project Coordinator and Project Coordinator’s Assistant.

Costs – citizens or legal residents of the EU Members States

Team members’ travel costs (specific conditions apply, more information will be given after you have been selected) will be reimbursed by the European Parliament 1-2 weeks after the event, upon submission of all necessary documents (forms for completion and instructions will be sent by the European Parliament prior to the event). The European Parliament will also pay a lump sum of up to 540 Euros in total to team members involved in the project to cover accommodation and meals in Strasbourg. They need to provide a copy of their valid press card or a letter of instruction from their editor stating that they work as a journalist, accompanied by a copy of their identity card or passport. The lump sums will be paid at the same time with the travel reimbursement, 1 to 2 weeks after the event. Team members will have to arrange their own travel. European Youth Press will assist with finding the accommodation in Strasbourg. Team members are responsible to provide the European Parliament with all necessary documents for reimbursement.

Attention: for participants living in Strasbourg no lump sum or travel cost will be paid.
