What we offer?
A paid traineeship within the Operations Section of the Delegation of the EU in the State of Israel.
The Operations Section selects and follows an important number of human rights and democracy projects under the EU’s European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). They cover the following areas:
- Promoting a favourable environment for civil society organisations and the promotion of human rights, in particular by fostering human rights education and respect for the rule of law and international standards, supporting human rights defenders and organisations, safeguarding freedom of association and freedom of expression, fighting against xenophobia, racism, and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and any form of hate speech;
- Advancing the rights of vulnerable minorities or groups within Israel, in particular the Arab minority and refugees/asylum seekers;
- Respect for international humanitarian law and human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the rights of the children in armed conflict.

The proposed internship would support the activities on human rights, democracy and possibly peace-related matters of both the Political Section and of Operations Section, although the intern will be formally assigned to the Operations Section. The Political Section follows political developments and reports to headquarters including on a variety of human rights and democracy-related issues. As EU Presidency, the Delegation and its Political Section coordinates the drafting, updates and follow-up of the EU Human Rights Country Strategy for Israel. This also addresses certain human rights issues affecting Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory, insofar as they relate to responsibilities of or functions exercised by the Israeli authorities. In this it works closely with the EU Representative Office in east Jerusalem.
Main tasks:
- active support to the EIDHR manager in his monitoring of projects, including analysing publications and reports, organising and accompanying field visits of projects, and helping ensure that information obtained from project partners is better reflected in the Delegation’s political reporting;
- maintain contacts with human rights and democracy NGOs as well as fostering contacts with civil society, including active participation in meetings with beneficiary NGOs;
- collect and analyse information on specific human rights and democracy issues.
Are you eligible for remunerated traineeship?
You may apply for the traineeship if:
- You are a young graduate with a University diploma (at least Bachelor degree)
- You have less than 1 year of professional experience
- You are a national of an EU Member State, pre-accession State or from the country where the Delegation is accredited
- You have no previous professional experience in any of the EU institutions of more than 6 weeks
- A good command in EnglishAdditional requirements that would be an asset
- Knowledge of Hebrew
- Degree in e.g. International Law, Political Science, History, Social Sciences.What are the general rules?
- Duration: four months
- Monthly grant: the selected trainee will receive a monthly grant of 1200 EUR
- Visa: trainees are responsible for obtaining and covering the cost of necessary visa
- Travel: trainees have to arrange and finance their travel to the EU Delegation
- Accommodation: the trainee will have to cover the accommodation costs
