un-careersThe mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This position is located in the Transport Policy and Development Section (TPDS), in the Transport Division (TD). The incumbent reports to the Chief of TPDS.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of TPDS and overall supervision of the Director, TD, the incumbent is required to perform, but not limited to, the following functions:

1. Assists in the planning and implementation of transport policies and programmes on innovative technologies including intelligent transport systems (ITS) and the role and contribution of innovative technologies to more efficient and sustainable transport outcomes;

2. Collects transport statistics and develops and/or maintain  special purpose databases, including Asia Pacific Road Accident Database, as well as qualitative information necessary for recurrent and ad-hoc research;

3. Applies suitable models to determine the trends of development in the transport sector and analyze the effects of alternative policies and proposals;

4. Provides specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on issues related to social, economic and environmental impacts of transport development at the regional, national and local levels. Identifies and analyses the effects of selected transport policy proposals:

5. Assists in the organization and servicing of legislative and other meetings and workshops. Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentation by senior staff;

6. Organizes training seminars and presentation materials on transport policy and development issues;

7. Prepares documentation (including project proposals; implementation status reports) for technical cooperation programmes and projects;

8. Monitors, backstop and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects;

9. Performs other related tasks and duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the Division’s services and work outputs.
