Responsibilities

The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) is recruiting an intern to assist in the support for the Technical Working Group on the Confluence on Urban Safety and Peacebuilding, which meets under the auspices of UNOG and is facilitated by UN-Habitat’s Safer Cities Programme and the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform.
During a two-year period, the objectives of the Technical Working Group are to network urban safety and peacebuilding practitioners, to expand the evidence-base of practice at the nexus of urban safety and peacebuilding, and to develop an integrated approach on urban safety and peacebuilding, with the aim of contributing to major agenda-setting processes including the HABITAT III Summit in 2016.

This internship offers applicants the opportunity to be part of a cutting-edge initiative that builds a network at the interface of urban safety and peacebuilding practice and advances the practical understanding of the use of dialogue, trust-building, and consensus-seeking processes.

The internship would be for a minimum of 3 months (renewable once for a maximum period of 6 months in total) and to start as soon as possible.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Section and under the daily guidance of the Professional Officer in the Section, the incumbent:

• Monitor and manage an evidence-gathering process, collecting practical evidence on programmes and initiatives that combine elements of urban safety and peacebuilding practice at the city level;
• Assist in the mapping and organization of relevant research for the process;
• Manage the review process, as well as assisting in editing tasks of submissions;
• Assist in the organizational aspects related to the Technical Working Group, including the preparations for regular meetings;
• Manage the online e-community of the Technical Working Group;
• Liaise with the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform and UN-Habitat on a regular basis and as necessary;
• Provide other support task for the Technical Working Group as they arise

Education

• Applicants must be currently enrolled in an advanced degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) at the time of application; or enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship either prior to graduation, or within a one year period of graduation.
• Excellent management, oral and written communication and electronic skills.

Languages

Proficiency in English is required.
Knowledge of French and Spanish would be an advantage.
