Press Officer – Greenpeace

Greenpeace_logoJob Vacancy – Greenpeace UK

Greenpeace is an international non-profit global campaigning organisation. Their independence and global reach enables us to stand for positive change through action in order to defend nature and promote peace. They investigate and expose global environmental problems, confront those in positions of power and present alternative solutions.

As one of their press officers, you will focus on gaining coverage for their campaign work and identifying opportunities for Greenpeace to make strategic interventions that help us win. You will also lead investigations into our targets and ensure the results get huge publicity, furthering our campaigns. Greenpeace’s press officers are on the frontline of the political battle to protect our environment. They need a politically savvy media operator who enjoys the cut and thrust of the daily news cycle, has a good grasp of all UK media, and has some understanding of who holds the power and pulls the strings when it comes to UK and global policy. In any given week your work could range from pitching an exclusive to the Financial Times to standing on a fishing boat discussing European oceans policy.

You’ll be great at spotting opportunities to intervene in political debates, and be able to translate complex political, scientific and environmental information into succinct and clear messages that successfully reach our target audiences. As well as your communication, interpersonal skills and diplomacy, this role will also test your ability to organise and improvise. You will need to be equally adept in facing and communicating with openly hostile audiences as with the passionately supportive. You will also have an understanding of the value of investigative work and of the role of mobilising audiences towards political action.

You’ll believe in their aims and will be able to demonstrate experience as a press officer or journalist. Some UK and overseas travel may be involved and, to ensure 24 hour cover, you’ll take part in an on-call duty rota. You will contribute to our fast-moving strategic campaign planning and development, and at times, you may also be required to work on one or more of our campaigns – to protect the Arctic, defend our oceans and protect the Earth’s ancient forests.

Salary: £35,700 per annum

Closing Date: 1 May, 2015 – 09:00
