Assistant Professor – Spanish – Translation/Interpreting

Colorado State University is a Research I comprehensive land-grant university. With 30,000 students the university is located in Fort Collins, a rapidly growing community of 144,000 at the base of the Rocky Mountain Front Range, 65 miles north of Denver.  The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures has a tenure-track faculty of 14, approximately 300 undergraduate majors, 600 minors, and over 20 graduate students.  We appoint 12 graduate teaching assistants.  Undergraduate majors in French, German and Spanish lead to a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures.  The Department offers minors in French, German, Japanese and Spanish.    Master of Arts degrees are offered in French, German and Spanish.  A joint M.A. with the English Department’s TESL program is also available.  Courses in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Latin, Russian and American Sign Language are also part of the undergraduate curriculum of the department.

Tenure-Track position in Translation & Interpreting (TI) at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in August 16, 2015.

The department seeks a well-rounded Spanish linguist/applied linguist who focuses on the theories, practice, and teaching of Translation & Interpreting Studies.  The goal is to expand the existing course offerings and start a new Spanish Translation & Interpreting program. Candidates are expected to bring expertise, enthusiasm and a demonstrated commitment to teaching, research and service.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in hand, in Translation/ Interpretation Studies, Spanish, or Spanish linguistics with a focus in translation, interpreting or a closely related field from an accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent non-U.S. institution.
  • Superior proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach from among the following: Spanish to English and English to Spanish Translation & Interpreting courses, ranging from foundational to specialized courses in Legal, Medical, and Business Translation, Consecutive/Simultaneous Interpreting, and Translation Technologies.
  • A strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching of Spanish Translation and Interpreting.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for productive scholarship in T/I Studies.

Responsibilities

  • Teach five courses per year.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, the department, and the college to build a new translation/interpreting program. 
  • Willingness to teach online and or hybrid courses on a regular basis.
  • Engage in research and publication.
  • Advise students in the major.
  • Assist the Spanish Section with outreach and recruitment.
  • Provide service to the department, university and profession.
