The Open Society Documentary Photography Project seeks to advance socially engaged photography and its potential to drive change. Through grants, exhibitions, and special initiatives they support photography to engage and mobilize people around issues of justice and human rights.
Job Profile
Interns will receive hands-on training on many of the broad range of activities involved in organizing exhibitions and will learn about how the Open Society Documentary Photography Project works with other programs and connects photographers to the broader human rights and social justice work of the Open Society Foundations.
Essential duties and responsibilities are flexible based on interests & abilities but may include the following:
- research on and outreach to prospective and current artists and grantees
- participate in and prepare materials for curatorial/selection meetings
- conduct background research on artists and human rights/social justice issues represented in the exhibition
- document exhibitions
- lead exhibition tours
- coordinate logistics for production, installation/de-installation, programming, and traveling exhibit
- update and generate content for our website, blog, and social media
- participate in other research projects related to our grant making activities
Qualifications
- must be currently enrolled in a relevant Graduate/Undergraduate Degree program. Upon acceptance, interns will need to provide a letter from their university indicating that they are receiving credit and/or funding for the internship.
- prior experience working with photography and coordinating exhibitions—preferably within a gallery or museum context—is required
- highly motivated and have demonstrated interest in the role that art and images can play in advancing social change
- strong communication and interpersonal skills
- demonstrated ability to write effectively and analyze and summarize complex information, and a desire to function in a team environment
- organized, self-motivated, and able to multi-task while remaining attentive to detail
- excellent computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint required
- must have familiarity with Adobe Photoshop. Experience with SketchUp preferred.
- available for a minimum of 8 hours per week for the entire Fall 2015 internship term: September 14 – December 11, 2015 (exact dates negotiable based on academic requirements and calendar)
