The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) invites you to submit a video, which creatively responds to the question:
“What does Democracy mean to me?” – with images and/or words.
Why? To celebrate EED’s two years of partnerships and “International Democracy Day” on 15 September… EED has been supporting local civil society struggling for democratic principles and processes in the EU Neighbourhood and beyond since the summer of 2013.
Who? All aspiring filmmakers (non-professional or professional) are invited.
What? Please respond to the question: “What does democracy mean to me?” through any video produced by any means. Animation, documentary, drama or experimental styles are all welcome. Please avoid simple “vox pop”s (filmed comments/opinions).
Duration: up to 60 seconds – no more!
When? From Thursday 6 August at 12:00 Central European Time (CET) until Tuesday, 15 September at 23:00 CET. Shortlisted filmmakers announced: 15 October. Final awards will be announced in December.
Where? Your current or past primary place of residence should be in one of the countries in which EED works: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, Syria, and Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine (EU Neighbourhood countries), as well as (since 2015, “Neighbours of Neighbours”): Bahrain, Chad, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkey & United Arab Emirates, as well as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan & Uzbekistan.
You may however produce the video anywhere in the world 🙂
Then what? Winners will be asked how they intend to use the prize, and how it could contribute to their “film & citizen activism”.

Audience Award = € 1,000
Five “Special Vision” awards of € 500 each
The prize money will be transferred to the winner’s bank accounts in the form of an EED grant to support their citizen activism. Other means of payment may also be used if justified.
