The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an Embassy. The EU Delegation to Somalia seeks to contribute to a more prosperous Somalia where the impact of conflict and instability is reduced and the dividend of a more stable environment will allow the Somali people to benefit from EU investments in state functions and in social and productive sectors.

A highly experienced communication expert to manage press, information and communication issues in line with the Delegation’s Communication Plan that he/she will renew every year. The PIO, who will be required to carry out regular missions to Somalia, will provide expertise to improve the visibility of the EU-Somalia partnership with a special focus on the Somali audience. The PIO will be working directly with the Ambassador and the Head of Political section, and build a collaborative network with EU Member States, Somalia officials, the media outlets and other relevant partners as an important member of one of the world’s largest EU Delegations.
Responsibilities
MEDIA:
– To draft and release EU statements and LTT’s, to organise formal/informal press briefings, interviews, press missions and other media activities;
– To build a large media network and manage accurately the press mailing list;
– To supervise coordination and compilation of press digests and prepare inputs for HQ managed press digests;
– To coordinate with Somali authorities and partners local press conferences for each launch or event;
COMMUNICATION:
– To coach the team and assist the partners in implementing project communication;
– To manage/initiate contracts for media consultancies;
– To manage special events: the PIO will have to plan many communication events according to the Delegation’s projects, priorities or EU special events (e.g. Europe day).
– To prepare social media campaigns.
GENERAL INFO OUTREACH
– To draft and design information material on the EU’s role in Somalia (brochures, factsheets, etc.)
– To update and improve the Delegation’s Homepage (ability to post on website) and to promote the website;
– To maintain and update the Delegation social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook;
– To design and purchase visibility items by initiating contracts or framework contracts.
– To execute any other activity requested by the Ambassador and the Head of section related to Press & Information duties.
The contract is initially for a limited period until 31/12/2015 based in Nairobi and funded under a Program Estimate.
The position is open to nationals and residents of Kenya with a valid work permit (compulsory).
