PhD Position in Marine Biogeochemistry

A skilled and motivated individual is wanted for a PhD project that involves an exciting new collaboration between the Biogeoscience group led by Prof. Tim Eglinton (www.biogeoscience.ethz.ch) and the Environmental Physics group led by Prof. Nicolas Gruber (http://www.up.ethz.ch) at ETH Zürich. The PhD research project will focus on the elucidation of processes governing the burial of organic carbon on regional to global scales. The project will involve utilization of a nascent database for ocean surface sediments, with particular emphasis placed on exploitation of geochemical (esp.14C) and sedimentological data, coupled with geostatistical modelling approaches to constrain the nature and magnitude of organic carbon accumulating in continental margin sediments. In addition to benefiting from close interactions between each group, there will be opportunities for laboratory and field (research cruises) work, as well as visits to collaborating institutions.

Applicants must have a Masters degree or equivalent in oceanography, earth sciences, geochemistry, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field. Strong mathematical skills are crucial, and experience in the laboratory is advantageous. The project requires excellent communication and writing skills, including proficiency in English.

Salary is according to ETH guidelines, with funding for 3 years guaranteed, and the possibility of an extension beyond this period.

The start date for the project is on or before October 1, 2015.

Location: Zürich, Switzerland

Application deadline: August 15th, 2015
