The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has a rich history dating back to 1632, when its forerunner, the Golden Age school Athenaeum Illustre, was established. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted at seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad. The UvA provides academic training in all areas of science and scholarship, and welcomes students and staff from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths who wish to devote their talents to the development and transfer of academic knowledge as a rich cultural resource and foundation for sustainable progress.
PhD Positions are provided in Sustainable Chemistry within the project Catalysis in Confined Spaces at University of Amsterdam in Netherlands. For this project, they are looking for six motivated PhD candidates who will focus on the following subjects:
- Catalysis in soluble MOFs – Embedding catalysts in supramolecular cages (organic/nonmetallic synthesis, homogeneous catalysis);
- Catalysis inside switchable cages (organic/nonmetallic synthesis, homogeneous catalysis);
- Civilizations of peptide aryl esters within Fujita-cages (organic/nonmetallic synthesis, homogeneous catalysis);
- Designing and synthesizing super cage MOFs for antivivisectionist reactions (inorganic synthesis, organic synthesis, heterogeneous catalysis);
- Elucidating chiral adsorption mechanisms in MOFs by molecular simulation (computational chemistry, molecular simulation techniques);
- Porous geographer frameworks with tunable confined spaces (heterogeneous catalysis, materials science, organic/organometallic synthesis).
Eligibility
Applicants must have an MSc degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, and excellent communication skills in English. Candidates with proven experience in the areas described above are preferred. Knowledge of Dutch is an advantage. Due to limitations in recruitment budget they will only consider candidates that are currently in Europe.
Scholarship
Positions are available starting from 1 July 2015. A later starting date (up to 1 December 2015) is also possible. The appointment will be on a temporary base for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings.
