Project Officer- Species Conservation – WWF-India




WWF-India, one of the largest conservation organizations, engaged in wildlife and nature conservation in the country, invites applications for two posts of Project Officer-Species Conservation, from candidates with an inherent sensitivity towards the conservation of nature and environment.

Locations:    i) Terai Arc Landscape, Haldwani, Uttarakhand
ii)Sunderbans Landscape, Kolkata, West Bengal

  1. Project Officer-Species Conservation- Terai Arc Landscape, Haldwani, Uttarakhand: A dynamic biologist, with a zeal to work in the landscape that has the highest density of wild tigers, is needed by WWF-India which is partnering with the Corbett Tiger Reserve and six other Forest Divisions in Uttarakhand for monitoring tigers, co-predators and prey. This process is being institutionalized by the Forest Dept. of Uttarakhand and WWF-India needs a full-time biologist to work with the authorities for assisting in this work. The candidate will be supervised by the Coordinator – Tiger Conservation and Head TAL – Uttarkhand. The candidate is expected to work for study design, data analysis and report preparation for tigers, co-predators and prey in the central part of Terai Arc Landscape.

The Job Profile:

Program Implementation and Technical Support

  • Carry out the tiger, prey and habitat monitoring work as per the approved work plan under supervision of the Coordinator – Tiger Conservation and Head – TAL Uttarakhand in Corbett Tiger Reserve and surrounding Forest Divisions.
  • Develop study designs for monitoring tigers in the landscape, in collaboration with the team.
  • Assist the Forest Department in field surveys, data analysis and report preparation with conservation recommendations.
  • To assess factors that are attributed to human tiger conflict.
  • Assist the state forest department in implementing the recommendations for tiger conservation.
  • Regularly update supervisors on progress.
  • Responsible for technical reporting pertaining to tiger conservation initiatives in the study area.

Networking, Coordination and Communication

  • Coordinate with supervisors, as well as communication team at WWF-India Secretariat for communicating progress as well as success stories from the project area.
  • Capacity building of the forest department personnel in Uttarakhand on camera trapping, data analysis using Mark-Recapture, Extract Compare and other tools as well as report preparation.
  • Regularly interact with various Govt. department(s), and community groups and other stakeholders for planning out and implementation of project activities and updating them with the progress as and when required.
  • Analyze information collected from field and prepare technical reports as per requirement.
  • Publish scientific papers on the tiger monitoring in the peer reviewed journals.

Program Development

  • PO, Tiger conservation will be responsible for assisting Head – TAL Uttarakhand and Asst. Coordinator, TAL-Uttarakhand, in preparing strategy/projects for addressing Tiger conservation related issues in Corbett Tiger Reserve and surrounding Forest Divisions.
  • The candidate will be responsible for effective liasoning with stakeholders including Govt. department(s), Institution(s), and NGOs for any issues pertaining to planning and implementation of project activities in the landscape.

Experience:Experience in monitoring tigers, co-predators and prey or any other large carnivore species is essential. Field experience in northern India is desirable. Good oral and written knowledge of English and Hindi is needed.

Project Officer-Species Conservation- Sundarbans Landscape, Kolkata, West Bengal: The Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve in India, together with Sundarbans of Bangladesh, has the uniqueness of having the world’s only mangrove habitat with tigers. A tiger swimming across one of the numerous channels that dot the mangroves is an awe inspiring sight, however, the habitat also makes tiger monitoring a challenging task even for the toughest field person. WWF-India requires a dynamic biologist, with a zeal to work in one of the most challenging tiger landscapes, Sundarbans, where tigers are in mangrove forests. Work involves institutionalizing monitoring tigers, co-predators and prey in Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve and assessing habitat parameters. The candidate will also have to work for managing human wildlife conflict in parts of West Bengal, through the projects being implemented by the Sundarbans team based in Kolkata.

The Job Profile:

Qualifications (common for both positions):M.Sc. in Wildlife Science/ Bio-Science or related subject from a reputed University in India or abroad.
