Job Vacancy – Public Information Officer – UN, New York
This position is located in the News Services Section (NSS) of the News and Content Branch (NCB), News and Media Division (NMD) in the Department of Public Information (DPI). The incumbent reports directly to the Chief of the News Services Section.
The News Services Section produces daily news coverage of United Nations activities system-wide through the United Nations News Service by continuously updating news stories on the United Nations web site and distributing, to media and others around the world, news and related materials via e-mail, including news digests and alerts and texts of important speeches, statements and resolutions; maintenance and enhancement of the United Nations News Centre and the Secretary-General’s web site including links to audio, photo and video news sources; direct outreach to media in all regions, including the organization of briefings programmes for journalists with senior United Nations officials; communicates the Secretary-General’s message directly through op-eds placed worldwide, and the production of regular analytical reviews of trends in media reporting and commentary on the United Nations, and its accounts of United Nations-related issues, for the Secretary-General and senior United Nations
officials.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief of News Services Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
• Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development and implementation of large, complex communications campaigns and media outreach activities, or responds to media interest in the Organization and its work; where appropriate, works with departments, funds and agencies to develop ways to implement campaigns and outreach activities system-wide and to incorporate the message and themes into all relevant events and products.
• Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other public information staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications/public relations issues/problems; works with the Executive Producer of UN Radio and TV Producers to plan, coordinate and complete multimedia feature packages, especially in connection with commemorative days and events, for use on the common UN platforms and for NMD social media platforms; determines how events can be planned and implemented across the Branch, and then promoted with media organizations, and partners across the UN system and beyond.
• Prepares or oversees preparation of a diverse range of information communications products in support of major campaign initiatives and media outreach activities; develops new and cutting edge online and digital content, using technological awareness to present information in creative ways responding to evolving news environments; hands-on involvement in creating weekly news video and other videos, including writing script, fact-checking and helping to review and edit the final video before it goes live.
• Drafts, writes and edits news stories, interviews and feature assignments.
• Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN.
• Plays a lead role in generating, coordinating features and ensuring thematic pages on UN News Centre and other related sites are kept up to date; arranges and conducts interviews with UN officials in keeping with events in the news cycle and events concerning the organization.
• Builds information networks; plans and oversees maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on the United Nations; plans and develops outreach activities.
• Manages and creates forward planning calendar for the News and Media Division based on upcoming events, major meetings, initiatives and commemorations, and media placement opportunities for senior officials; produces materials for print/electronic/voice/visual media.
• Assists in the day-to-day operation of the section to include participating in coordination of substantive and administrative activities of the section, interpreting and disseminating policy, providing procedural advice, improving reporting systems, handling operational and administrative queries, preparing budget submissions, establishing and/or coordinating training programmes and monitoring and evaluating results.
• Functions as Editor for the English News in the editor’s absence and carries out additional assignments, as required.
• May coordinate and direct a team of public information staff and/or mentor and supervise the work of junior officers on specific projects.
